Please note, Heriot Watt University students will receive direct updates of new projects by email and the myHWU app, University of Edinburgh and University of Strathclyde students will receive notifications via their Programme Coordinators.

Details of the projects* will include:

  • Title & Description

  • References

  • Any software experience or background knowledge required by the student

  • All placements will be conducted online via Teams, Zoom or industry partner preference

*See the project example document above.

Students are expressly encouraged to independently seek out advice on the presentation of their application CV's and covering letters, we suggest contacting the Careers Service site on the button above.

Your application will be vetted from both a presentation and academic standard.  Should your application meet the standard required it will then be included as a short-list of candidates to be forwarded to the Industry Partners for consideration.

Industry Partners then make their decision on their interview shortlist and the placement or placements they will offer.

On completion of the interview stage and the successful candidate giving acceptance of the offer*, the SFRA Coordinator will meet with the student to take them through the agreed expectations of student and Industry Partner, the SFRA Agreement Documents (including deadline date for dissertation submission), and any Industry Partner documents required before the placement will commence.

The placement will take place as per the Agreement between Industry Partner, Student, Academic Supervisor and SFRA Coordinator.  Please see an example of the Agreement Form above.

*The University Exam Board will confirm all students’ eligibility to proceed with the project placement as part of the students MSc.

  • The student and Industry Supervisor decide the arrangements of the Industry Project

  • The Industry Supervisor is responsible for the industry-side implementation of the Industry Project

  • The student is responsible for the completion of the Industry Project (supported by an SFRA Academic Supervisor)

  • The Industry Placement is supported by the SFRA Coordinator

  • On completion, the student will write and submit their MSc Dissertation on the agreed deadline date. The student will make a presentation of the project to the Industry Partner

  • The Dissertation will be academically assessed, and form part of the students MSc qualification

  • As part of our ongoing development we ask if feedback from both the industry partner and student can be provided in order communicate our performance to the SFRA Board, to continually improve our service and meet the highest expectations.
